The Good Acre

Help us kick off this year's Global Volunteer Week by joining us at The Good Acre (TGA)! Volunteers will be working in  TGA’s community garden space, adding new soil to plots, mulching and bagging paths, and potentially doing other garden prep activities such as weeding and composting. These activities are physical, involving a lot of shoveling, lifting, and bending. This garden space is used by TGA staff for events, tours, and meetings, and also by our neighbors to grow food and flowers for themselves! 

Second Harvest Heartland

Volunteers assist with sorting, labeling, weighing and packing various food items to meet immediate needs and help feed our hungry neighbors. The projects vary from day to day and volunteers regularly work with fresh produce, dry goods, bread, and other food donations. This volunteer position requires volunteers to be able to twist and bend down, stand for the duration of their shift, and lift up to 5 pounds. Some positions require the ability to lift 40 pounds. 

JFB Coffee Connect

Tree Planting

Please join us on Earth Day 2025 to plant trees just north of Betty Crocker Driver. We are partnering with the City of Golden Valley to plant new trees between Betty Crocker Drive and Bassett Creek. Dress to do some dirty work (digging, trimming root ball, shoveling, placing mulch, and watering). We'll work in the rain too and schedule a different day if there's lightning. Meet at the north doors of the Champion Center Employee Entrance.​

JFB Clean Up

Join us at the shelter and lend a paw with a variety of tasks, from walking dogs to cleaning and organizing! As this is an ongoing volunteer opportunity, the activities may vary, so come ready to jump in wherever help is needed. This role may involve bending, lifting, and getting your hands dirty, but most importantly, you'll be making a difference for the dogs and cats there! To keep things manageable, we can host up to four volunteers per day—we recommend coordinating with your team in advance!

Help with the daily care of senior horses while supporting a meaningful program for children! Help Pillsbury United Communities prepare their Oak Park demonstration and community garden for the growing season. Tasks will be dependent on ground conditions and what the season calls for, but could include cleaning out the gardens to prepare them for planting, building a hoop house or building gates for the fenced in garden. An indoor backup activity is available if conditions do not allow us to volunteer outside.

Help install a new outdoor gathering space for volunteers at our New Hope warehouse, including installing a fruit and pollinator habitat. The space will serve as a COVID-safe gathering space for volunteers to socialize and participate in orientation pre- and post-volunteering. This will include landscaping work, installing perennials, and light carpentry (assembling furniture/fencing/shade structure). An indoor backup task is available if conditions do not allow us to volunteer outside.

Location: 8300 W Franklin Ave, St Louis Park, MN 55426

Volunteers will participate in a variety of activities, including buckthorn removal and hauling, seeding, and planting at the Nature Center. More details are to be determined as we get closer and see what the spring allows.

Westwood Hills Nature Center is right down the road from General Mills HQ, and many volunteers choose to walk to this project. This is a great opportunity to be a part of the restoration of our own backyard.

Thursday, 4/28 (backup date May 5th)

Time: 1:30PM-3:30PM

Location: JFB 9000 Plymouth Ave N, Golden Valley, MN 55427

Join us to plant new trees on the JFB property. Over the past 2-3 years, over 30 mature trees have been removed due to emerald ash borer infestations. Volunteers will work in pairs to dig holes and plant the new trees around the property. This project will take place outdoors and will require bending, twisting, and kneeling in the dirt. Closed-toed shoes are required, and volunteers are encouraged to dress for the weather as we will be working rain or shine (as long as conditions permit).

JA BizTown is a 12,000-square-foot simulated city located at the new state-of-the-art facility in St. Paul. By working in one of 18 JA BizTown shops, students learn what it takes to run a successful business, manage a debit card and checking account, and work as a team. Volunteers are paired with small groups of students to help them make important business and personal finance decisions in their assigned JA BizTown shop.

Junior Achievement programs equip students with the skills needed to succeed in school and in life. A group of volunteers per classroom will spend a half day in a 2nd-grade classroom teaching students about how money flows in a community & how citizens benefit from and contribute to a community’s success. Great opportunity to give back through education + enjoying the fun charisma of kids in the classroom! *Spanish speakers needed!

Tasks will include cutting back dead flowers and branches and possibly adding a layer of mulch. This activity will take place outdoors and will require bending, twisting and kneeling in the dirt.

Volunteers will help refresh the trail winding through the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden at Theodore Wirth Park with a new layer of mulch. This garden is home to more than 500 plant species and 130 bird speices, and contains woodland, wetland, and prairie areas. The narrow, winding trails of the garden lead visitors through a variety of habitats and is over one mile long.
